Sumanth 'BONI' Cinema review

Released on: 12/06/2009
Story:
With the sole objective of starting a ‘Pulihora’ centre in their lives, two orphans DD (sumanth) and Chinna (trinetrudu) grow up together and they join the gang of Giri (tanikella) as recovery guys. Fights, street brawls and other rugged things become their agenda and soon DD wants to take a higher step so he decides to join the more ruthless Das (jayaprakash). On the other hand, there is Pragathi (krithi), daughter of minister (ahuti prasad) who promises help to farmers but her father fails to keep it up. She decides to get herself kidnapped so that money can be taken from him and she can help the farmers. Incidentally, Das is given a similar assignment by someone and DD, Chinna do the job. Pragathi mistakes this to be her staged drama and from then on things change, to add to it, DD falls in love with Pragathi and his thoughts get complicated. What happens from there forms the rest of the story.
Performances
Sumanth was repetitive, though nothing special about his act but he carried it well. Krithi was stunningly beautiful and looked hot in the songs. Tanikella, Ahuti, Jayaprakash were the senior cast and did their bit well but their role could have been chalked even better, Trinetrudu was natural and showed potential, Chandramohan was regular, the others did not have much to add.
Technical aspects
Full marks go to the cinematography, costumes and the art department. Even the background scores and three songs are good. Editing was crisp but could have been better. The dialogues were dull, the script was not written wittily and the screenplay was apt. However, the production values were quite high and there was good quality in the presentation.
Director’s portrayal
The director had good support from the cast and also the crew but then he had a rather weak plot and could not narrate it with intensity. He also failed to focus on the comedy track and more focus was on the presentation than the actual content that can appeal to the audience. For a romantic story, chemistry is important between the lead pair and he must work on extracting it from them. The concept is good and there are a few offbeat approaches during the song canning and few scenes which is a variety attempt. Better luck next time!!!
Critic’s view
The film has been high on the technical aspects and given the mixture of romance and action elements, it could have been churned out well. However, it fell on the pace and even the energy in the comedy sequences was missing. Few scenes were presented very well but then the thumb rule is a strong script is needed for any movie to get successful. While the first half goes about in an average manner it is not until the second half that some speed comes in and there are twists in the story. Sumanth is a rather self contained actor so he should work on breaking the shell and give a high adrenaline act which did not happen in this venture. Given the debut of so many individuals in this project, the attempt can be appreciated.
